History
Long before anyone tracked the moon for its symbolism, entire civilizations built their calendars around it, because it was the most reliable clock in the sky.
The Original Timekeeper
The Babylonians are credited with one of the earliest lunar calendars, dividing the year into twelve lunar months of roughly 29 to 30 days each as far back as the 2nd millennium BCE. Because twelve lunar months add up to about 354 days, eleven days short of the solar year, the Babylonians periodically added an extra month to keep their calendar aligned with the seasons, an early form of the same problem calendar-makers still solve today.
The Islamic calendar still uses a purely lunar system of twelve months, which is why observances like Ramadan shift roughly eleven days earlier each year relative to the solar calendar. The Chinese, Hebrew, and Hindu calendars, by contrast, are lunisolar, blending lunar months with solar-year corrections, similar to what the Babylonians were already doing thousands of years ago.
What a Lunar Cycle Actually Is
A full lunar cycle, from new moon to new moon, takes about 29.5 days, known as a synodic month. This differs slightly from the moon's actual 27.3-day orbit around Earth, called a sidereal month, because Earth itself is also moving around the sun, which shifts the angle needed for the moon to appear 'new' again from our perspective.
- The word 'month' itself comes from the same root as 'moon' in most Germanic languages.
- A 'blue moon' refers to a second full moon within a single calendar month, not an actual color change.
- Some agricultural societies still time planting and harvest by lunar phase, a practice with roots going back millennia.
The Design
Fine line moon phase art traces the full lunar cycle beside a steady affirmation: growth continues through every stage, not just the visible ones. Ancient calendar-makers understood something similar. The moon was never only useful at full brightness.

Why do lunar calendars need an extra month sometimes?
Twelve lunar months fall about eleven days short of a full solar year, so many lunar and lunisolar calendars periodically insert a leap month to stay aligned with the seasons.
Is the Islamic calendar lunar or lunisolar?
It's purely lunar, with no correction for the solar year, which is why its months drift across the seasons over time.
What's the difference between a synodic and sidereal month?
A sidereal month (about 27.3 days) is how long the moon takes to orbit Earth. A synodic month (about 29.5 days) is how long it takes to cycle through all its phases as seen from Earth.
