The Old English Roots
Wax comes from Old English weaxan, meaning to grow or increase, the same root that gives us waxing eloquent. Wane comes from wanian, meaning to lessen or diminish. Neither word originated as astrological vocabulary, they were everyday verbs for growth and decline long before they got attached to the moon's cycle specifically.
