Where Shinrin-Yoku Started

Japan's Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries coined the term shinrin-yoku, meaning forest bathing, in 1982, launching a national program encouraging time in forests as preventive health care, distinct from hiking or exercise-focused outdoor activity.

What the Studies Measured

Subsequent research, much of it led by Japanese physiologist Qing Li, measured reduced cortisol levels and increased natural killer cell activity in participants after forest visits compared to urban walks, some of the more frequently cited physiological findings in nature-based wellness research.
