Tarot Started as a Card Game, Not a Divination Tool

Tarot cards originated in 15th-century Italy as tarocchi, a trick-taking card game played by nobility. It wasn't until the late 18th century that occultists like Antoine Court de Gebelin began reinterpreting the deck as a tool for divination and symbolic meaning.

Why The Fool Is Numbered Zero

Every other major arcana card runs 1 through 21, but The Fool sits at zero, before the sequence even begins. That placement is deliberate: zero represents unlimited potential, a story that hasn't been written yet, rather than a fixed step in a journey.

The Cliff Edge Is the Message

In the traditional Rider-Waite-Smith imagery, The Fool walks toward a cliff edge with a small dog at his heels, one foot already in the air.
